Why Now? Why Us?

Canada is undergoing radical change at a time when our national media is in collapse. In two years there will be another federal election. Canada needs more diverse reporting to inform that democractic moment -- reporting that cares more about your values than their shareholder profits. That's what The Tyee has done for more than 10 years in B.C., garnering numerous reporting awards and a loyal readership. So, join us now and together we'll bring this spirit to the national conversation.

What you get...

Your money pays nationally focused, credible, proven journalists (see sample below) to write the stories other media miss. Your money gives you access to a poll that tells these journalists what issues matter most to you. Energy? Environment? Health Care? Sign up now and tell them. Plus, your money keeps The Tyee paywall free, which means you're giving the gift of excellent independent reporting to all Canadians, regardless of their income levels. Because news is for the people.

...and paper dolls.

Yes, paper dolls. For those who become builders at the $15 level or higher, we'll send you paper dolls in the form of the leaders of all the federal parties: Stephen Harper, Thomas Mulcair, Justin Trudeau, Elizabeth May, and Daniel Payette. Dress them up. Make them dance. Take videos of them giving the speeches you wish they'd give. Just a fun little thank you from the political nerds at The Tyee to the political nerds who support independent media.

Some writers your money will support...

Maude Barlow

I support The Tyee because it tells the stories we need to read and that mainstream media has given up on. What else hooks me? My four gorgeous grandkids.

Stevie Cameron

What hooks me? A great story. Especially a great story with criminals. I am far less interested in nice people, good people, than I am in bad.

Naomi Klein

At a time when Canada is radically changing, our national media is in collapse. Support to The Tyee to bring more fact-driven reporting to the national conversation. It matters.

Lawrence Martin

I support The Tyee because it's an intelligent publication. What else hooks me about it? That it's one of the few media products in western Canada that's to the left of Dick Cheney.

Linda McQuaig

We desperately need some counterpoint to the business media. That's why I support The Tyee.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas

I don't like my news farmed out, I take it wild.

Who are we?

We're an independent, online news magazine from BC. We're devoted to fact-driven reporting and analysis that informs and enlivens our democratic conversation. Our reporting has garnered the respect of our peers and readers and countless awards. While some journalism gives the last word to power, we prefer to give the last word to ordinary people.

What are your news priorities?

What issues do you think need more and better reporting? Energy & Environment? Government Accountability? Inequality? Militarization? We want to know. When you register, you get a chance to tell us which news priority is most important to you.

Who's with us?

A number of civil-society groups are supporting our bid to bring more independent reporting to the national conversation. The list includes the CCPA, the Council of Canadians and many more. See the full list here.
